ABOUT

In the eighth grade, students will begin with South Carolina’s colonial development and settlement as a British colony and end with where South Carolina is now and how it attracts businesses and people, while continuing to find solutions to new challenges.  We will look at how geography affected South Carolina's development.  In addition to this, students will also learn about its political and economic development as well and how it contributed to South Carolina's social fabric.  While following the textbook chronologically,  students will also be exposed thematically as well so as to make connections between content and time periods.

Topics covered this year:

FIRST NINE WEEKS

We will study the development of South Carolina during the settlement and colonization of North America in the period of 1500– 1756.  We will also look at how South Carolinians and Americans created a revolutionary form of government during the period of 1757– 1815.  

SECOND NINE WEEKS

We will demonstrate an understanding of the conflict and compromise in South Carolina, the Southern region, and the United States as a result of sectionalism between the period 1816–1865.

THIRD NINE WEEKS

We will explore South Carolina’s role in and response to the dynamic economic, political, and social developments in the United States and around the world during the period 1862–1929.

We will be examine the impact of world events on South Carolina and the United States from 1929 to present.
